MUSICAL ABILITY

DOMINION STANDARD HIGH “The standard of playing in New Zealand is good but the musical knowledge of students is not up to the same level, remarked Dr T. P. Fielden, examiner to the Royal College of Music, who is at present staying at Wain’s Hotel. Dr Fielden was formerly director of music at Charterhouse School, and is now a professor at the College of Music. He is the author of a book entitled “The Science of Pianoforte Technique,” which is one of the standard works on the subject. While in Christchurch on Wednesday, Dr Fielden gave a piano recital in the Cathedral to a large audience, the collection being in aid of the Cathedral funds. He had given a recital in Southwark Cathedral, said Dr Fielden, and found that it was a great success. He has given recitals in the North Island also and on December 3 will give a broadcast recital over 4YA. Dr Fielden will leave New Zealand in January for the West Indies, where he will conduct further examinations.
