NGAITAHU CLAIM
ANOTHER FETITION TO GOVERNMENT The claim of the Ngaitahu tribe against the Government, dating back almost 100 years, is still the subject of representations by the Maoris. At a meeting of members of the tribe in the city last night it was resolved to forward a petition to Parliament requesting the repealing of the Ngaitahu Claim Settlement Act, 1944, and. the making of arrangements to hear representations in the matter. The petition, which is signed by a number of Maoris in the district, states that the recommendation of the 1921 Native Lands Claims Commission that the sum of £345,000 be paid has never been acted on, that the Trust Board Act, 1946. was passed without consultation with the tribe, and that the tribe was not consulted as to the settlement of the claim and its administration.
