Jumped Carefully

Battle Song Mare Grand Melee, a candidate for the Apprentices’ Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, is a four-year-old mare by Battle Song from Fracas (Winning Hit —Scrimmage). Trained by A. Cutts for Mr J. B. Douglas-Clifford, Grand Melee won a division of the Trial Stakes at the Banks Peninsula meeting last month. In Fine Form
Salmon Spear is right at the top of his form, and he has bright prospects oi continuing his winning record in middle distance races at Riccarton. He will be ridden in his engagements by W. F. Ellis. Engaged at Riccarton In 16 starts last season The Stormovik collected three wins and a third. On the second day of the recent Trentham meeting he finished second to Playboy, beaten by a neck, in the Belmont Handicap, of one mile, and he followed this up by winning the Hack Cup, of a mile and a distance, at the Rangitikei meeting, the, place-getters being Commercial and Waimanu. A five-year-old gelding by Broiefort from Arena, The Stormovik is engaged in the Apprentices' Handicap on Saturday. Good Prospect
Spare Part looks a good prospect for one of the distance hack events at Riccarton. In his race at Invercargill on Saturday he was almost knocked off his feet at the end of a furlong and his rider. L W. Hare, lost his whip. Spare Part looked hopelessly placed at the fivefurlong post, but he was up in fourth position at three furlongs, and finished on over the last furlong to get within a length of the winner.
Balloch Colt Bronstar's record for this season is a win, two seconds and a third in five starts, his unplaced start being in the Wellington Guineas, in which he finished fourth. He is a big chestnut colt by Balloch from Restrain, by Lord Warden front Solrose, by Solferino from She’s Named, by All Red from Winter Rose, by Euroclydon. Solrose, who won 11 races, was a half-sister to Sun Up, winner of 14 races. Solrose raced In the interests of the Dunedin sportsman, Mr J. Lindsay. Official Resigns
Mr Alf. Dickson has resigned his position as timekeeper to the Canterbury Jockey Club after having been one of the club’s officials for 23 years. From 1924 to .1941 Mr Dickson was the club’s judge, and shortly after he resigned that position the timekeeper, Mr R. Wallace, died, and Mr Dickson was appointed to the vacancy. The fact that Mr Dickson has resigned his position with the Canterbury Jockey Club does not, however, mean that he is severing an active association of more than 50 years with racing. The new timekeeper for the club will be Mr A. C. C. Robilliard, who is already well known for his other sporting activities.
