SHIPS OFFICERS’ SALARIES NEW AWARD RATIFIED Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. A final settlement of the ships’ masters and Officers’ dispute which threatened at one stage to hold up New Zealand shipping .has been reached in an agreemnt between the New Zealand Merchant Officers’ Guild and the shipowners on,, the terms of a new award. The New'Zealand Ships’ Masters apd Officers’ (Coastal ShipDing Companies) Award has now been ratified by the Court of Arbitration and was issued to-night. The award introduces a new basis for salary scales. The scales will now be based principally on seniority whereas previously they were assessed according to the gross tonnage of the vessels, concerned. The minimum monthly wage rates for masters and officers in vessels of 101 to 600 tons are as follows:—Third officers (in same company) £29 17s 6d (to rank as such for not longer than two years); second officers (in the same company), first year £3O 7s 6d, second and subsequent years £32 10s; chief officers (in same company) first year £34 12s 6d, second and third years £36 15s, fourth and subsequent years £37 15s; masters (in same company), first year £SO 7s 6d, second and third years £sl 7s 6d, fourth and subsequent years £52 10s. For vessels above 600 tons and not exceeding 1000 tons masters are to receive an additional £2 a month and officers an additional £l. Under this award workers other than boys will receive £6 a month sea-going allowance in place of the former war risk bonus while on articles. Boys will receive £3 a month. The wage clause of the award will operate as from November 1 and. the remainder as from November 14. The award will continue in force until October 31, 1948.
