Avondale J.C. November 29 .. Woodville J.C. December 6 .. Canterbury J.C. ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS “ Divvy,” Otekaike.—lt was the last race of the day. " Ten Bob,” Mosgiel.—Eriskay is a five-year-old mare by Salmagundi from Jedburgh, by Balboa from Sabor, by Fowlingpiece, a son of Carbine. Acceptances for the Wairio meeting are due to-morrow. Smart Gallop Although the track was described as being very fast, Thimble’s performance in winning the Manchester Handicap at Feilding in 2min 4 3-ssec was a particularly good one. The Theio galloper may not find it beyond him to run out- the mile and af-half journey of the Derby. Consistent in Cup Langue d’Or has not won a race since he scored in the Hawke’s Bay Cup in April, but he has a consistent record in the New Zealand Cup. He’ was fourth to Kevin, Lowry Bay, and Glenfalloch three years ago, carrying 8.3. In the following year, with 7.13, he was third to Golden Souvenir and Chung Chong. Last year, again with 8.3, he was second to Catterick Bridge. Feilding Winner The Pagan’s win at the Feilding meeting on Saturday made his record for the season two wins, and a third, in six starts. A four-year-old gelding by St. Boswell’s from The Ring, he had only two starts as a three-year-old and recorded a win and a third placing. Sensational Punter Arrested Leonard Wanliss, aged 38, the sensational cash punter known to bookmakers as “ New Zealand," was arrested at Flemington while waiting to back Columnist for thousands of pounds. He was taken to the city Watchhouse, but was released on bail in time to return to the course and see Columnist win the Williamstown Handicap. Wanliss was charged with having left his wife without means of support since November 1, 1943. The police said the wife took out a warrant for his arrest in Sydney on Friday. Wanliss was detained in the grandstand enclosure shortly after the second race and was taken to the city by car. While at the watchhouse he took several thousand pounds in bundles of fives and tens from his pocket and said he was going to back Columnist with it, and that he had already invested £4OOO on the horse. He was granted £2OO bail, and he rushed back to the course, but the police estimate that he would not have time to place all his bets before the race started. Desert Girl Injured Desert Girl, a prominent Stewards’ candidate, got down in her float when being brought to Invercargill from Riverton at the week-end. She stripped her off hind leg badly and when galloped yesterday she showed signs of stiffness afterwards. She was taken through to Riccarton today ip the hope that the injuries would respond to treatment. If H. N. Wiggins attends the Cup meeting, as he now hopes to, he will have the mount. The final decision will be made to-morrow. The Cup Favourite Of the performances recorded within the past week or two by New Zealand Cup candidates, the most impressive was that of Beau le Havre in winning the Levir) Handicap with 10 stone, and the Beau Repaire horse is likely to hold his place as favourite for the two-mile event on Saturday. Unlike his half-brother. Royal Chief, Beau Repaire did not win a race beyond 11 furlongs and in spite of the staying form of Beau Vite and Happy Ending, the Beau Peres sTiowed their best form in races of less than’ two miles. On the dam's side, however, there is a mixture of staying and sprinting blood in Beau le Havre’s pedigree. He was got from the imported mare Pretty Brown, by Tommy Atkins (by Carbine’s grandson Spion Kop), from Cleelia, by Lancegaye from Cleone, by The Tetrarch. Lancegaye was by the Spearmint mare, Flying Spear.
