YACHTING TRIALS

PRELIMINARIES TO MAJOR EVENTS P.A. AUCKLAND, Nov. 15. Matara finished first in the first trial on Saturday in a series to select the Auckland 18-foot yacht to contest the world championship in February. After several changes of position, Matara took the lead in the hardfought windward leg to finish the crossing line 27sec ahead of Macushla, with Beverley third. The race started at 11 a.m.. and the finishing times were:—Matara, 12hr 26min 4sec; Macushla, 12hr 26min 37see; Beverley 12hr 27min 16sec.

An outstanding performance was given by Bettina in winning the first Sanders Cup trial comfortably in the fresh easterly wind on Saturday afternoon from Carita. Bettina took the lead on the beat to the first mark and appeared from then on to have the race well in hand. Carita was beaten by 2min 42sec. with. Daring 34sec further astern.

R. Goldwatev and B. Watson will represent Auckland in the 1948 Cornwall Cup contest at Paremata in January. They won the two trials in succession off Westhaven on Saturday morning. E. Tucker, commodore of the Takapuna Boating Club, will travel with the boys as a delegate.
