THE CENOTAPH

Sir, —I was greatly surprised to see in this morning’s Daily Times the replica of the plaque to be placed on the cenotaph, which included the Fascist emblem, the axe and faggot. Did the young men of this generation die in vain in their fight against this creed, or did they die that it may be glorified in their own epitaph? Ask the maimed and crippled veterans of the Libyan campaign what they think of this hated symbol. Get their opinion—then design a new commemorative slab. —I am, etc., Dunedin, November 14. Disgusted. [The emblems of the axe and Fasces are of Roman origin. They are part of the original design of the Cenotaph and have been in place since it was erected.— Ed O.D.T.]
