JET-PROPELLED MODEL AIRCRAFT

The first jet-propelled model aircraft in the Dominion is one of the exhibits in the Auckland Model Aero Club’s display. Arranged in two sections, the display shows model aircraft of many types, from simple balsa throwaway gliders to petrol models of 10ft wingspaß, and also illustrates stages in their construction. Working on the same principle as the German flying bomb, the jet model, which was made in the United States, is set in motion with a hand pump and a vibrator battery coil. There is a lead from the coil to a combustion chamber in the model, and inside it stainless steel reeds, 1-6000th of an' inch in thickness, vibrate 280 times a second. There is a scale model of an Ercoupe machine, powered with a twin-cylin-der Diesel engine, included in the exhibition. Like the jet model, it is controlled in flight by two wires about 70ft in length by which the operator can make the model climb, dive or stunt.
