TRIAL GALLOPS
INTERESTING SERIES AT RICCARTON Special to the Dally Times CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 12. A series of trial gallops was got off at Riccarton this morning. There were four events, but divisions extended the programme to seven races. The trials served a good purpose for local trainers, enabling them to gallop their horses under race conditions, but the form need not all be accepted too, seriously. The Two-year-olds The two-year-olds ran half a mile in three divisions. In the first division Balkis was soon in front from Blue Print and Pendot, while Golden Amber moved up after a furlong. Balkis held on to beat Golden Amber by two lengths, with Sky High finishing well in third place, while Pendot was fourth. Time, 49 3-ssec. Balkis is a filly by Sir Beau and she raced twice at Wingatui. Any Time led out from Flnigln in the second division with Running Brook and Chaffinch next. Finigin drew clear before going two furlongs and won easily by five lengths from Running Brook, who stayed on better than Any Time. Then came Chaffinch, Aucherlee, and Deccan. Time, 49 l-ssec. Finigin is a Robin Goodfellow—Knockfin colt, and he has improved since he rafted at Wingatui. Lady Josephine, Profane, Eulogise, and Celtic Chief led early in the third division. They continued without much change for nearly three furlongs, when Celtic Chief and Eulogise drew clear, a head separating them at the post. There was a gap to Card Money and Cyrano, who headed the others. Celtic Chief is a Coronach colt. Hack Six Furlongs There were two divisions in the sixfurlong event for hacks. Le Sonnet and Citril led early from Newspaper, who took charge after three furlongs and won easily. Primitive and Citril were well clear of the others. Time, lmin 15sec. The Open Sprint In the open class six-furlong sprint Flying Orders and Blue Trout led Faithful Pal, John Gay. and Lovemorn from the start. Blue Trout dropped out after going half a mile and Lovemorn -stayed on to beat Faithful Pal by half a length, with Flying Orders a length away, while John Gay, Invest, and Lord Elgin followed at intervals.
