Nizami Filly Chubin, who won at Ellerslie on Saturday, is a grey half-sister by Nizami to A 1 Sirat, Bridge Acre, and Lord Barwon. She is reported to be a particularly smart-looking youngster. Soneri Galloped Between two of the events at Levin on Saturday Soneri was galloped with Longsword. She wore bandages on both legs, but pulle'd up all right. Artful Maid It is reported that Artful Maid has built up a lot since going into L. Cavalier's stable, and she is expected to show improved form this season. Artful Maid was for some time in a Wingatui stable. Napier Park Events The Second Maiden Stakes at the meeting on Saturday is to be the fourth event, not the fifth. The Park Stakes is now the fifth event, the Ahuriri the sixth, the Victory the seventh, and the County the eighth. Pleasing Cup Trial Welcome Guest did a particularly pleasing New Zealand Cup trial at Hastings on Saturday morning, when he covered a mile on the course proper in lmin 40sec, coming home the last six in lmin 15 3-ssec. He finished full of running. Welcome Guest is a four-year-old by Royal Chief from Clarenceuse. Private Trainer Luminous Knight and Heroic Girl, both recent winners,, are trained at Limehills by C. H. Cook, who is private trainer to Mr W. Swale. Cup Favourite It was reported at Levin on Saturday that King’s Ransom is unlikely to fulfil his engagement in the New Zealand Cup, but he will run in the shorter races at the meeting. His connections consider that he is not seasoned enough for a hard two-mile race, and they may concentrate on the Auckland Cup. May Not Start C. G Humphries is not keen on starting Royal Tan in the New Zealand Cup, as he would rather wait until later in the season before testing the Royal Chief gelding over two miles, but (says the Star-Sun) circumstances may force his hand. Royal Tan has a hoot that splits, and Humphries is afraid it may cause trouble if he adopts a waiting policy. For that reason he is keeping Royal Tan in strong work, and he may contest the Cup. though Humphries would welcome an easing of the tracks in rounding off his preparation.
