ILLEGAL DRUG IMPORTS
NEGRO SEAMEN SENTENCED FEDERAL COURT ACTION Rec. 10 p.m. SYDNEY.Nov.iI Three negro seamen who broughl into Australia quantities of the drug marihuana were sentenced in the Special Federal Court to-day to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour. The police told the court that the drug, which is variously known as marihuana, hashish, bhang and hemp, and scientifically as cannabis sativa. is a sexual stimulant and that it was being widely used by coloured seamen and the women they associated with in Australian ports. The negroes were members of the crew of the American ship Marine Phoenix. Asking for a severe penalty. Mr J. D. Holmes, for the Crown, said that only two orevious seizures of the drug had bP l made —in 1912 and about 10 months ago. Small quantities of the drug found during a Customs search were in the form of cigarettes and tobacco.
