CRICKET

MORNINGTON CLUB The fifth annual meeting of the MornIngton Cricket Club was held on Monday, the president (Mr A. E. Jelley) presiding over a good attendance of members and supporters. A letter was received from a highlyesteemed member of the club, Mr C. Chirnside, who was now serving in the army, and who conveyed his best wishes to the club for a successful season. Moving the adoption of the balance sheet, Mr. Jelley congratulated the A team, which had finished runner-up in the Second Grade A competition conducted by the Otago Cricket Association. He also congratulated those players whose names appeared among the leading batting and bowling averages. The balance sheet disclosed a satisfactory credit balance. Messrs Morris and Brown also spoke to the report and in similar strain, and the motion was carried. The election of officers and delegates resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr E. E. Nicholson; president, Mr John Hope; auditor, Mr G. E. Laing: secretary, Mr F. Dennison; treasurer, Mr H. W. Grimmett; committee—Messrs'B. Caddie, G. E. Laing, W. Mitchell, L. W. Waller. C. J. Robertson; club captain, Mr G. Sutherland: deputy club captain, Mr E. Jarvis; delegate to Otago Cricket Association, Mr F. Morris (sen.); delegate to Otago Junior Cricket Council. Mr G. Sutherland: selectors—Messrs H. W. Grimmett and W. Mitchell. The newly-elected president (Mr J. Hope) was given a very cordial welcome to the club by the retiring president. Mr Hope mentioned that he had first played cricket about 55 years ago. He congratulated the club on the excellent progress it had made during the past few years. Eulogistic reference was made by Messrs Morris and Brown to the magnificent service given to the club by the retiring president (Mr A. E. Jelley), a vote of thanks for services rendered being carried by acclamation. Mr Jelley suitably replied. A vote of thanks was accorded the press also for service given during the past season. Opening day was fixed for Saturday next at the Mornington ground, at 2.30 p.m.
