RAID ON TOBRUK
BOMBER SQUADRON HEAVY DAMAGE INFLICTED HUGE FIRES STARTED (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) CAIRO. Sept. 26. (Received Sept. 27, at 9.30 p.m.) An R.A.F. communique states that a large force of bombers severely damaged the harbour and foreshore at Tobruk, directly hitting barracks, wharf buildings, and motor transport, and starting a large fire north of the wharves All the raiders returned safely R.A.F. planes reconnoitred Hie western desert and effectively raided Assab, Macacca, Berbera also Metemma, near-hitting three grounded planes and starting a fire which was visible 50 miles away A British naval communique issued in Cairq,to-day states: “Our naval forces again successfully attacked the Sidi Barrani area in the early hours of yesterday A large fire, accompanied bj a series of explosions, was observed The fire was still turning two hours later." A Rome communique announces that a British submarine sank an Italian torpedo boat destroyer in the lonian Sea. The majority of the crew were saved. The British renewed the air bombardment of Tobruk. Some private buildings and a field hospital were damaged. Five people are dead and 10 wounded British naval units shelled Sidi Barrani. Italian planes attacked a convoy in the Red Sea.
