OTAGO HORSE PARADE
CLYDESDALES AT TAHUNA PARK FAIRLIE BREEDER'S SUCCESS CHAMPIONSHIP TO ALLANDALE CHATHAM For the fourth time in 12 years Mr Andrew Grant, of Fairlie. yesterday won the Wright, Stephenson Perpetual Challenge Cup for aged sires at the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society s annual stallion parade. The handsome trophy will now be inscribed with the name of a fourth member of the celebrated Allandale Clydesdale stud to win what is generally regarded by heavy horse breeders as the blue riband of the breed in the Dominion This vear's winner was Allandale Chatham who was reserve champion at the Centennial Royal Show last year, and a highly successful show ring horse as a colt. He was got by the imported sire Desire, who 12 years ago won the cup for the Allandale studmaster and also secured the parade championship, which was another of Mr Grants successes yesterday Smaller Entries The entries at yesterday's parade, which was the fifty-seventh held by the society were fewer than has been the case for some years but the general standard of quality has seldom been better. Moreover from the interest that was taken in the dav's proceedings it'was evident that, despite the fact that mechanised farming has been considerably increased as a result ol farm labour problems, farmers generally are still interested in well-bred farm workers. The entries totalled 10 and the most disappointing feature of the displav was the small number of voung colts Actually however, there is a more general activity in heav\ horse breeding in Otago at the presen l time than was suggested by the exhibits of vouna stock yesterday and it may be exoected that no matter what urgencies may arise in the near future, this province will adhere a? «tronelv as it has alwavs done in the face of ereat discouragement to a breed of livestock which has come to be regarded, in both numbers and quality as peculiar to Otago Keener competition would have been more satisfying yesterday but in *hp circumstancesit was to the rredit of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society and thf Clvdesdale breeders of Otago that there was a mrade at all. In the face n* less difficult conditions every other district in (he Dominion has from time to time allowed its stallion parade to be abandoned. RESULTS OF JUDGING The judging in the four classes comprising the catalogue was as follows: Stallions. Four Years or Over (Four Entries) Mr Andrew Grant's (Fairlie) Allandale Chatham, by Desire (imp.) out of Craigie Ella (imp.) I Mr G. P. Johnston's (Alma) Comely Dunmore. by Dunmore Superb (imp.) out of Rosalie Belle .. 2 Mr D. S. Brown's (Dunedin) Verdlea Moonlight, by Scotland's Superb, out of Mav Hazelwood 3 Mr J. Martin's (Wright's Bush) Overdale Viceroy, by Ochtertyre Viceroy, out of Myra Everest ..-........-••• 4 The first prize-winner is a magnificent sample of the breed, and it is doubtful whether in all his distinguished show ring career he was ever better brought out than he was yesterday. He has a fine masculine heaa. reminiscent of his excellent breeding sire's, a free, clean movement, plenty of substance, and excellent bone anct feather. He carries his attractive bulk fairly and squarely on a fine set of legs and feet, and looks every inch a breeder's horse. The issue of the championship and its accompanying. trophies was never seriously; in doubt. The second prize-winner,' who was also the reserve champion, is a wellbred and striking-looking horse, whose sire, like that of the champion, has his name inscribed on the Challenge Cup. but he fills the eye less than Mr Grant's horse, and was not brought out as well. Verdlea Moonlight. Mr D S Brown's third prize-winner, has achieved more than one success at Tahuna Park, but he found himself in very superior company yesterdav. Nevertheless, he is a very nice type of sire, with an obvious masculinity which stamps him as a useful breeding sort.
Stallions, Three Years Old (Two entries) Mr R Hamilton's (Tapanui) Remarkable, by Reputable. (imp.) out of Snowfiake .. • • •• 1 Mr Andrew Grant's Allandale Douglas, by Allandale Chatham, out of Allandale Rose .. .. I These were two good colts, with breeding behind them, and a pleasing appearance. The winner showed an easier gait in all paces than the second horse, but there was very little to pick and choose between the two. The second prize-winner looks like reproducing most of the outstanding qualities of his. sire. Stallions, Two Years Old (Three entries) Mr Andrew Carruthers's (Ngapuna) Scotia, by Scotland's Farewell (imp.) out of Glack Sunray (imp.) •„•,' '„' - Mr G. P. Johnstons Comely Majestic, by Dunmore Superb, out of Gay Lady .. •• •• ■■ •• 2 Mr G. P. Johnston's Comely Marquis, by Dunmore Superb, out of Rosalie Belle ■ • ••;_■• 3 Mr Andrew Carrulhers was represented bv a very fine colt. Bred in the purple. Scotia is one of the most Diomising youngsters seen at Tahuna Park for some vears. He has substance for his age. a fine set of white legs and a gay head with a courageous and attractive eye. He moves nicely, and given time to grow down should develop into as good a stallion as his sire. The other two were gjjod tvpes. demonstrating the breeding Qualities of the sire which Mr Johnston 'mported several years ago. and which has undoubtedly left its stamp on the heavv horse stock of: the North Otago district and even farther afield. Stallions. One Year Old (One entry) Mr C. T. McCallum's (Flag Swamp) Ginger Jack, by Willowbridge McKay out of Charm • ■ ■ 1 This youngster was well grown and should turn out well. He has a good strong head and excellent understand-
ings. On the principle that no good horse can ever be a bad colour his appearance can be overlooked in the meantime while he is filling out and showing his real quality. He was bred by the exhibitor, and it is worthy of note that in nearly every case yesterday the entries paraded were bred by their exhibitors Wright, Stephenson Cup (Four entries) Mr Andrew Grant's Allandale Chatham 1 Championship and Donald Reid Challenge Shield (Four entries) Mr Andrew Grant's Allandale Chatham 1 Mr G P Johnston's Comely Dunmore 2 The judge was Mr W. McCaw Allison (Milton), who expressed appreciation of the quality shown, while deploring the lack of competition. He regarded the champion and reserve champion horses as outstanding samples of the Clydesdale breed
