TECHNICAL COLLEGE WORK AN INTERESTING DISPLAY Members and friends of the Parents' Auxiliary of the King Edward Technical College were given the opportunity last night of seeing classes of the Art School at work, as well as inspecting some of the results of their year's labour. The comprehensive nature of the work undertaken by the various sections of the school was obvious from a glance round the various rooms where the classes were at work. Etching, much of it of a very high standard, pottery-making, needlework, crafts, life drawing, commercial processing and window-dressing—all these branches of art were represented and the large number of parents present were obviously more than casually interested in the work of the various classes. One display, with a very practical side to it at the present time, consisted of children's clothes, some knitted, others manufactured from old clothes, which have been made bv the needlework class for the children of London. They will be sent to England as a special gift from the Technical College. The garments are all beautifully made and should be appreciated by the London authorities. The head of the Art School. Mr Gordon Tovey, briefly addressed those present before the inspection was made, and stressed the value of the new art education in New Zealand as a means of encouraging freedom of expression in the individual. He also referred to the value of art schools in keeping active the cultural life of the Dominion during a time whert more important things had to take first place, and expressed appreciation of the Government grants for free education. Mr Tovey emphasised the benefits gained by the school throuch having two teachers with overseas experience —Miss Celia Drummond, who had spent a vear at the college, and Mr D. Charlton Edgar, who had spent i some time "studying art at Home.
