CENTRAL OTAGO

QUEENSTOWN Arbor Day Arbor Day was recently observed in Queenstown. The school children of both schools, under the direction of their teachers, planted a large number of poplars in a favoured spot on Queenstown Hill. The children were then marched to the One Mile, and a number of games were indulged in and sweets were distributed. Farewell The Rev. J. C. Fussell, who will retire from the Wakatlpu parish at the end of the month, will be the guest at a farewell social from the church people at Arrowtown and Queenstown this week. Personal Miss M. Salmond has returned to Dunedin after spending a few days with her parents. Mr and Mrs McFadgen, Invercargill. spent a short holiday in Queenstown. Miss M. O'Connell, Palmerston, is on an extended holiday to her father, Mr J. E. O'Connell. Mr A. Simson has returned to Queenstown. He was accompanied by his daughter, Mrs J. Day, of Nelson. Miss Leary, accompanied by Mrs F. Webb, went to Invercargill on Friday. Mr S. Knowles returned to Glenorchy yesterday after spending a holiday in Dunedin and Southland. Mrs C. Lobb, accompanied by her son John, of Invercargill, has been on a visit to her sister-in-law, Mrs W. Hales. WANAKA Patriotic Committee At a meeting of the Wanaka Patriotic Committee, Mr W. A. Scaife presided. It was decided to thank the Wanaka Golf Club for its generous donation. Messrs T. A. T. Allison and F. Barltrop, of the Hawea Patriotic Committee, were present. It was decided that Hawea and Wanaka should combine for the Queen Carnival Campaign and that each committee be credited with the proceeds of each function on a 50-50 basis.

The following committees were set up: —Women's committee —Mesdames W, A. Scaife, McKegg, Allison, and McCarthy; parades, procession, and grounds—Messrs Studholme, Manson, Barltrop, and L. Morris; raffles—Messrs Mayne, N. McCarthy, Scott, and Bridgman; sportsMessrs A. Allison, jun., R. Waldron, K. Davie, and Dr Douglas; entertainments—Messrs A. Scaife, G. Waigth, Misses M. Kane, and J. Scaife; canvassing—Messrs Aubrey, Milne, Allison, and Scaife; executive—Messrs Allison, Scaife, Barltrop, Davie, and Mayne; publicity agent, Mr G. C. Waigth. It was decided to hold a community sing at Wanaka on October 5, and a carnival on Labour Day at Wanaka.

Lawn Tennis At the annual meeting of the Wanaka Lawn Tennis Club the following officers were elected:—President, Mr R. Scott; senior vice-president, Dr Douglas; vicepresidents—Messrs T. A. Bridgman,. G. Morris, and R. Waldron; secretary, Miss J. Scaife; treasurer, Mr R. Scott; committee—Mesdames W. A. Scaife, G. Morris, J. Morrow, A. Milne, Miss Z. Ewing. Messrs R. Trevathan, A. Scaife; social committee—Messrs R. Trevathan, G. Waigth, Misses Z. Ewing and J. Scaife. The balance sheet showed a substantial credit. It was decided to give £lO to the Patriotic Fund. The opening day was fixed for October 26. Swimming Club The committee of the Wanaka Swimming Club is at present carrying out beautification work at the site of the proposed juvenile swimming baths. The Wanaka Islands Domain Board and the Lake County Council are assisting the club in the work and a well-known Dunedin resident has made a substantial donation towards the cost. Ironside. 90—13—77. Farewell Function Mr O Mathias, who has been employed at Wanaka Station for a number of years, left for a military camp recently. Prior to his departure, Mr Mathias was entertained at a social evening by the manager and staff of the station, and was the recipient of a present. ROXBURGH R.S.A. Reunion A large number attended the annual reunion of the Roxburgh branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association last Saturday evening. After the toast of " The King had been honoured, the president of the R.S.A. (Mr A. Burton) extended a hearty welcome to those present, particularly the members of the Dunedin Executive and the choir. The toast of " Fallen Comrades " was honoured in silence. Mr Burton proposed the toast of " The New Zealand R.S.A., and the Dunedin R.S.A. The toast of " Local Bodies and Organisations " was responded to by the Mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli) and others. At the conclusion of the function Mr Burton thanked the members of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers' Choir for the musical part of the evening. Schools' Sports Sub-association The annual meeting of the Teviot State Primary Schools' Sports Sub-association was held in the school, Roxburgh, on September 10. The annual report was received and the statement of finance adopted. As the balance stood at a very satisfactory figure, £1 was donated to the Sports Fund of each of the three schoolsMiller's Flat, Ettrick, and Roxburgh. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr W. G. Macdonald; vicepresident, Mr D. Kelly; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. D. Rodger; auditor. Mr A H H. Webster; executive—Messrs Davidson, Leslie, Glendinning. and J. H. George; delegate to the Otago State Primary Schools' Sports Association, Mr F E L. Forrester. It was decided to hold'the sports meeting at Roxburgh on October 19, the programme and rules to be the same as last year. Trophies would be presented to the boy and girl in each school gaining most points in the sports. The Herbert Smith Cup would be awarded to the school gaining most points. MIDDLEMARCH Queen Carnival A carnival dance and a night of fun under the auspices of the local Patriotic Committee for the funds of the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) was arranged by the pupils of the Strath-Taieri High School Department (Mr Duncan, teacher) and carried out successfully in the A. and P Hall on Friday night. The Middlemarch Pipe Band was in attendance and marched from the school, via the township to the hall, which was crowded to its utmost capacity. The most amusing item of the evening's entertainment was the " wheelbarrow derby," in which the following residents of the district took part:—Dr Logan, Messrs Mitchell, A. Carrnthers. Elliott, McGregor, Gillespie. F. Howell. Moncur. Watson, Farquhar. Keen and James. The winner was Harold Logan (R. N. Elliott), ridden with conspicuous skill by Dr Logan, and bv Mr F. Beattie, second place being secured by F. Howell and B. Watson. The net proceeds exceeded £32. The Middlemarch Golf Club will give a dance on Friday night in aid of the Air Force Queen. Music will be supplied by the O.K. Orchestra. OMAKAU Bowling Club There was a good attendance of members at the first annual meeting of the Omakau Bowling Club, Mr J. M. McKay presiding. The annual report showed that the first season of the newly-formed club had been a successful one, and that the club now had a good green, complete with clubhouse and amenities. The following office-bearers were elected:—President, Mr W. J. Lennon; vice-presidents, Messrs E. Read and W. Mcßreen; secretary, Mr C. A. Deaker; assistant secretary, Mr H. Oaten; selector, Mr J. Jeffs;

committee—Messrs 3. Naylor. A. Young, Father J. Mackay, C. Tylee, H. Oaten, C. Drake (green supervisor), and M. Harty. Reference was made to the approaching departure from the district of Mr W. T. Parata, who was largely instrumental in forming the club, and as an appreciation of his services it was decided to make him the first life member of the club. Patriotic Committee

At the fortnightly meeting of the Omakau Sub-district Patriotic Committee, Mr E. Mawhinney (vice-chairman) presided. A welcome was extended to Messrs T. P. Brown and R. Butcher, representing Matakanui and Poolburn respectively. The meeting considered a proposal from a group of Alexandra residents who recently staged a play in that town, that they 'should give a performance at Omakaii, each town to receive half the proceeds for the Patriotic Funds. The suggestion was approved, and arrangements will be made for local performers to assist in the programme. Plans for a gymkhana on Labour Day were discussed, and a working committee, comprising Messrs Lucas, Jeffs, and Deaker, was appointed to take charge of the programme. Golf

On Saturday the final of the President's Trophy was won by H. Ingram, who defeated C. Deaker, 4 and 3. In the Ladies semi-final, Miss T. Alexander defeated Mrs Wallington, 2 and 1, and will meet Miss C. Harvey in the final. In a medal round, J. Truesdale returned a net score of 64, while in the ladies' section Mrs Ingram, Mrs Beattie, and Miss C. Harvey returned cards of 76. Next Saturday is the closing day, and a match will be played between teams picked by the president and club captain. Rugby Football The Matakanui Football Club has challenged Ranfurly (holder of the White Horse Cup), and this match will be played at Ranfurly on Saturday. This will be the final match of the present season. Personal The Central Hotel at Omakau, which has been conducted for the past three vears by Mr W. T. Parata, has changed hands, and will shortly be taken over by Mr W. Prince, of Dunedin. Mr D. G. Davis, of the local Post Office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Kaitangata. Mr A. M. Pitches, of Ophir, and formerly of the staff of the Omakau Post Office, has been appointed to the staff of the Taumarunul office. TAPANUI Queen Carnival On Monday afternoon there was a representative meeting of members of the different committees set up recently to organise functions for the Queen Carnival to meet Messrs A. C. Leary and C. Wood, members of the Queen Carnival Provincial Committee. Mr E. H. Murney (chairman) introduced the speakers. Mr Learv said the chief reason for the visit was "the fact that it was felt that efforts on behalf of the Air Force Queen were not going as well in the district as in other parts of Otago, and by meeting representatives of the committees set up it was thought that they would get somewhere. From the outset a certain amount of apathv was shown but he was pleased to say that in most districts everything was now working smoothly. He felt sure the district would rise to the occasion and raise a large sum. , . Mr Wood congratulated the district on the splendid response made on behalf of the Red Cross appeal, and said he saw no reason why a like effort should not be made for the rehabilitation of their soldiers. He appealed to those present to get behind the object, and suggested wavs and means to raise funds. Messrs R. F. Sim (Heriot), R. R. Kirk (Kelso), and W. B. Naylor then outlined what their respective committees were doing in the way of organising functions. Cricket

The annual meeting of the Tapanui Cricket Club was attended by a small number of members, the president (Mr J. D. Edgar) occupying the chair. The annual report and balance sheet were adopted. The report disclosed a successful season, and a strong financial position. A committee, consisting of Mpssrs J. D. Edgar, A. Rodger, A. Mills, D. Kane, D. McNeil, and the Rev. J. S. Somerville, was set up to carry on any activities during the coming season. A vote of thanks and best wishes were tendered to the secretary, who is shortly leaving for camp. Racing Club

There was a good attendance of members of the Tapanui Racing Club at a meeting held on Friday evening, Mr J. A. McDonald (president) occupying the chair. The chairman explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of making arrangements to hold the annual race meeting at Wingatui. but the club's application to race there had been refused by the Racing Conference Executive After a general discussion it was decided that the annual races be held on the Tapanui course, and that stakes to the value of approximately £6OO be given.
