TERRITORIAL SERVICE
OPERATION OF BALLOT SYSTEM MEN AVAILABLE FOR OVERSEAS WELLINGTON, Sept. 23. Men who are drawn in the ballot for territorial service, v.'hich will begin to-morrow, and who are passed medi-. cally fit and are not exempted, will be expected to go into camp immediately, according to an announcement by the Minister of National Service (Mr R. Semple). The Minister also emphasised that the men selected for territorial service in the ballot this week would not be exempt from service overseas at a later date, and would be included in future ballots for overseas service. The number of men registered in the First Division of the General Reserve, he said, was approximately 93.000. Asked whether there was likely to be another ballot before Christmas. Mr Semple said this would be entirely governed by circumstances, but if another ballot were necessary adequate notice would be given those called up.
THE GENERAL RESERVE MEN LIABLE FOR SERVICE The age limits of the First Division of the General Reserve from which 16,000 men will be drawn by ballot for territorial service are from 19 to 45 years. This division is in three classes. Class A comprises all reservists who have attained the age of 21 years but have not attained the age of 41 years. Class B consists of all First Division reservists who have not attained the age of 21 years. Class C consists of all reservists of the First Division who have attained the age of 41 years.
