ARMY MATCH ABANDONED TEAM SERIOUSLY DEPLETED Advice was received by a meeting last evening of the Otago Rugby Union, over which Mr D. C. Jolly presided; tiiat it will not be possible for any Army team from Burnham to visit Dunedin this season. A letter from Colonel E. T Rawllings. officer commanding the Southern Military District. stated that owing to various troop movements the Burnham team was very seriously depleted It had been hoped to build the team up from the new recruits arriving with the Fourth Reinforcement, but the entry of that reinforcement into camp had been delayed, and it did not appear that the Burnham camp would be able to muster a worthwhile team again this season. Southern Congratulated The Southern First Grade team was declared winner of the 1940 club championship and the secretary was instructed to send a letter of congratulation to the club Patriotic Match Details of the match next Saturday between a Public Service team and University A, to assist the Patriotic Fund, were discussed, and the secretary (Mr E. S. Wilson) mentioned that all of the gatemen at Carisbrook had offered their services for the day free Seven-a-side Tournament It was reported that an encouraging response had been received from clubs to the union's inquiry about a seven-a-side tournament on September 28 and it was decided to organise a tournament for First, Second and Third Grade teams Entries will close at 2 p.m. on Monday September 23 Junior Player Ordered Off The referee of the Southern-Union Third Grade match on Saturday reported mat he had ordered off a Southern player for querying instructions. The player was suspended for one playing Saturday, Opoho Ground
A letter from the town clerk (Mr R. A Johnston), stating that before any top-dressing could be done on the Opoho ground it would be necessary to relay the drains, prompted some criticism of the manner in which improvements to this ground had been handled by the Reserves Department of the City Council. It was pointed out that it had been shown in the first place that the drains, for which the union was paying, had not been correctly laid, and that unnecessary delay and confusion had been caused. —The meeting decided to send a copy of the town clerk’s letter to the Alhambra Club, with a suggestion that it should approach the superintendent of reserves.
