TATTERSALL’S RACES
CUDDLE UNPLACED GOLD ROD WINS CHELMSFORD STAKES (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, Sept. 12. (Received Sept. 13, at 6.30 p.m.) The defeat of Cuddle, who failed to gel a place in the Tramway Handicap, was a severe shock for her host of admirers at Tattersall’s races, Randwick, yesterday. She was well placed along with The Marne until nearing the turn, where the latter left her standing, and she came home weakly in ninth place. The Marne and Panax fought out a thrilling finish. Gay Blonde distinguished herself by coming smartly from well back to finish strongly in fifth place. Sporting Blood and Silver Streak never threatened danger. Ilium was a bad last The Marne carried 81b over his Epsom weight, and meets Panax on 13lb better terms in the Epsom. New Zealand-breds were well to the fore in the other events, notably the Chelmsford Stakes, which race was won by the brilliant Gold Rod, with Mala and Gustos the place-getters. Silver Ring was a good fourth. Mala’s whirlwind finish was a much stronger topic than Gold Rod’s victory. The latter, galloping easily, turned into the straight with several lengths’ lead, and just when the public was proclaiming his easy victory Mala unwound a terrific run and got within half a length of the winner. The consensus of opinion, however, is that Gold Rod was eased up. Gustos showed much better form than in the Canterbury Guineas. Sylvanciale and Lough Neagh were never in the hunt. Brazilian won the first division of the Novice Handicap in stylish fashion, after playing up at the barrier. Cerne Abbas was always handy, finishing a good fourth, and is expected to improve. Ridden by Knox, who was recently injured, Irak, winner of the second division of the Novice by three lengths and a-half, beat Brazilian's time by one second and a-quarter, which is regarded as a particularly creditable effort. The Athenian finished sixth in Brazilian’s race, while Hands Up and Raepata were unplaced in Irak's race. Satmoth had a stirring duel with Wykeham in the Spring Handicap, and triumphed by half a head. Golden Treasure, although he seemed dangerous at one stage, was unable to sustain his run and finished a fair third. Golden Chance, ridden a skilful race in a crowded field, won the Welter Handicap narrowly but impressively. On Parade ran wide, but was always prominent, and should do better shortly. > An unprecedented incident occurred in the Trial Hurdles, won by Musician, ridden by A. Dyer. The jockey had to be carried to the scales in a semiconscious condition. He received a severe knock on the nose at the first jump and was unable to remember anything afterwards, yet he went on to win. While unsaddling, Dyer fainted and was unable ’ walk to the scales, and was consequently carried to them by a stipendiary steward. L. Fraser, and the judge, Dudley Smith. The rules permit this to be done, but actually this is the firs' time it had to be resorted to. Apropos of the destruction of the hurdler Section, another hurdler. Recognise, also entered in to-day’s Trial Hurdles, broke a blood vessel and died to-day. The results of the chief events are as follows; — TRAMWAY HANDICAP THE MARNE. 8.10 (D. It was reported that he crossed too quickly, interfering with Gay Blonde and Cuddle. M’Carten stated after the Chelmsford States that Gold Rod had nothing to fear from Mala, and he expected the former to acquit himself brilliantly in the Derby. Dyer, who was injured on Musician, states that the horse jumped very high, causing his foot to leave the stirrup, his face striking the horse’s neck. He suffered great pain, but improved at the third hurdle. Dyer, who is an apprentice, had no recollection of how he stayed on the horse. MOONEE VALLEY RACES TWO JOCKEYS SUSPENDED MELBOURNE, Sept. 12.
