£18,000,000 “NO” TO SPINSTERS

Four members of the British Parliament—all men—pleaded in London on behalf of 35,000 spinsters for pensions at 55 and “ equality with widows.” They pleaded in vain. Minister of Health Sir Kingsley Wood. Scottish Secretary of State Sir Godfrey Collins, and Financial Secretary to the Treasury Mr W. S. Morrison told them if they gave pensions to spinsters at 55 it would start a snowball rolling which would cost the country £18,000,000 a year in 10 years’ time. The four spinsters’ champions were Mr J. C. M. Guy, M.P. for Edinburgh Central; Mr H. Holdsworth, M.P. for Bradford South; Mr G. Mathers, M.P. for Linlithgow; and Mr Rhys Davies, M.P. for Westhoughton.
