CONVEYANCE OF CHILDREN TO SCHOOL
TO THE EDITOR Sir,—We have been hearing a good deal palely of what is in store for those motorists who break the regulations that are laid down for the safety of the public. In view of all this, we Pounawea parents are wondering what the Education Board thinks of the state of affairs that exists in the conveyance of the children to the Owaka School. Here we have 18 children jammed, goodness knows how, into a car built to seat five or six adults. If this number is not being taken in the bus at present, it is because some of them have been supplied with other means of conveyance rather than have them incur the risk. In spite of the protests of the parents and of the local committee, the board has so far refused to take any action in the matter. Would the responsible board members allow their children to travel under similar conditions? What would the chances of these children be if ever the car skidded or collided with another vehicle? I trust that the Minister of Transport will at an early date investigate the arrangements for the conveyance of children to the schools. Personally, I would be ashamed to belong to a board that not only allowed such a slate of alfairs, but refused to remedy it in spite of the fact that the local School Commilltee has been battling for three or four months to get the board to supply a bigger car. —I am, etc., Safety First. Pounawea, September 12.
