POLITICS AND CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Mr Savage asked in the House the other day if measures which he advocated were not in accord with Christian principles. This surely is brazen effrontery on the part of the leader of a party that has climbed to power on a wave of class hatred, artificially fomented by the Communist Party. Is it in accord with Christian principles at the present juncture to fan hatred of class by class? Surely if ever men who are well to do have given evidence of the essentially libellous character of the abuse heaped on them by the Labour Party at the last election, these men are supplying it today. These men, and the widows of men like them —for Mr Savage hits capital regardless of the individualhave uttered no unworthy complaint, although the Labour Party is making them, as far as it dare, a whipping post. The .Government is using them as a target ’ for its sheer destructive hate, just as Herr Hitler used the Jews in Germany. The capitalists in New Zealand today are. I submit, to be congratulated on the marvellous example of Christian forbearance they have displayed. Thev are to be congratulated on the readiness they have shown to act in
accordance with the interests of society, even though to do so means personal loss for them. The very name of the Labour Party is a class name and stands for class hatred and destruction. We hear plenty of talk that is sloppy tenderness, like Dr M'Millan’s wedding ring scandal, but it is matched by the insinuations made concerning these unnamed capitalists who seem, if we are to believe Labour members, to have the nature of devils.— I am, etc., Effrontery.
