FIRES.
A SCHOOL DESTROYED. f. ____ INCENDIARISM SUSPECTED. (Peb United Pbebs Association.) WHAKATANE, January 10. The main building of the District High School at Whakatane was totally destroyed by fire at 2 o’clock this morning. The fire had a good hold before the brigade arrived, and blazed furiously for a considerable time, lighting up most of the town. The origin of the outbreak is a mystery, but incendiarism is suspected.
OUTBREAK AT MAMAKU. THREE PREMISES DESTROYED. (Feb United Press Association.) ROTORUA, January 10. A billiard room, a shop, and a dwelling in the main street at Mamaku were destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning. The owner is Sarah Jane Overall. The cause of the fire has not been discovered. The owner was aroused by the smoke and gave the alarm, but there were no firefighting appliances and the building could not be saved. The insurances were £6OO in the Northern Company on the building and £IOO on the stock.
