NEW ZEALAND ALLIANCE.

VISIT _OF AMERICAN FLEET. CLOSING OF HOTELS SUGGESTED. (Peii United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 8. Tho annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance was concluded to-day. The following resolutions bearing on political action were passed:—“That while not abating one jot of our demands for a two-issue ballot paper, wo .do not, under tho present circumstances, ask for legislation during the coming session, but if legislation bo introduced we will leave it to the executive to take whatever action may be necessary to maintain our principles.’’ “That we endeavour -to pledge our own voters, that in voting for parliamentary candidates they will put prohibition before party.” In reference to tho approaching visit of the American fleet the following resolution was adopted“ That this annual meeting of tho Now Zealand Alliance respectfully draws the attention of the Government to the fact that tho United States has been under prohibition since 1919 : that before national constitutional prohibition the Secretary of the Navy issued an order prohibiting tho use of intoxicating liquor on naval vessels, and- since that order the policy of tho United States navy has been total abstinence on service; that Admiral Sir Frederick Field, of tho British Special Service Squadron, out of courtesv to the American nation, closed tho canteens of his squadron while in American ports, and this meeting urges tho Government, as an act of courtesy, to declare closed all licensed premises in any New Zealand port during the visit of the American fleet to such port.” Mr Will J. French, a New Zealander now in the Labour movement in America, who is visiting the dominion on holiday, addressed the meeting. Greetings from similar organisations in New Zealand and abroad wore received. Votes of thanks to the citizens of Wei-' lington who had provided hospitality for the delegates and to tho president for his services in tho chair terminated a notable convention. The officers elected were as follows; — President, Mr John I. Boyds (Christchurch) . was re-elected, and many vicepresidents were also re-elected; treasurer, Mr J. V. Brown; auditors. Messrs Arcus and Pnttrick; Standing Committee—Mr W. D. Hunt, tho Revs. W J. Comrio and F. E. Harrv, Messrs A Atkinson, C. M. Luke, and P. E. Patrick.
