STILL SAWING WOOD. “MUST DO HARD WORK.” LONDON. April 26. Sir Percival Phillips, writing to the Daily Mail from Doom, says that the ex-Kaiser seemingly is content with his monotonous life of sawing wood, of which he has enormous stacks. Thrifty neighbours deplore the wasteful destruction of timber, but his wife replies: “Wilhelm is an active man and must do hard work to maintain his health.” Wilhelm often walks for half an hour through the ' village before breakfast, escorted by bored Dutch police. The household’s ennui resembles that of Napoleon at St. Helena. Within the walls of his Doom house Wilhelm keeps up the fiction that he is still Emperor. When faithful German pilgrims arrive the court marshal maintains the strictest etiquette, resembling that of Potsdam. Wilhelm takes (ho liveliest interest in German politics, but never talks about them, except with trusted members of his former court, who arrive from Germany with suspicious secrecy. While his wife hopes that Germany will recall her husband, the fallen monarch no longer cherishes that delusion.
