“SO THIS IS AUSTRALIA.” NEW CONTRALTO DISCOVERY. LONDON, April 25. “I could jry for joy to bo back after my tour of 33,000 miles,” said Mr Seymour Hicks, tho actor, on his return to London. “My only fear is that people will say I’ve got fat. ' “I shall shortly publish a book on my experiences in Australia. 1 intend to produce two American plays, ‘The Guardsman’ and ‘Air Five O’Clock,’ and one Australian play.” Mr Hicks is entitling his book, “So This Is Australia.” Tho chief characters are a cockney valet and an Englishman. “I saw one' aborigine, but no kangaroos or rabbits.” ho says. “I discovered a remarkable contralto, Miss Vera Wrighr, whom Dame Nellie Melba requested me to bear sing. She is a most, wonderful singer. Her range covers three octaves, with the most remarkable lowest register over beard in a contralto. She has never bad any training. lam arranging for three vears’ tuition in Paris, after which "Miss Wright will probably amaze everyone.”
