Oi HEAVY STATE EXPENDITURE. Prefls Association—By Telegraph—Copyright, LONDON, July 28. (Received Aug. 1, at 8.15 p.m.) The bread subsidy is costing the Treasury £47,000.000 annually, and the Government has now decided that the amount cannot be increased. If it is necessary Jto increase the bakers' wages the price must be raised above 9d per loaf. Hitherto the masters have refused to discuss an increase in wages or the question of lesser hours, because the regulated prices made it impossible owing to constant sma.l strikes.—A.- and N.Z. Cable.
