PROTECTING DISCHARGED SOLDIERS

LAND BOARD REFUSAL JUSTIFIED. (Per United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 31. The Canterbury Land Board to-day had before it about 130 applications for advances in respect of houses and farms under tlie Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act. representing a total sum of,about £120,000! In pursuance of its policy of protecting discharged soldiers from what it considers excessive land values, the board declined to grant a certain application, after discussing the matter with the vendor. .However, an hour later the vendor reappeared before the board, and stated that he was prepared to take £300 less for the property. At the reduced figure the board considered the value was a fair one, and reconsidered the application and granted it.
