ADVANCES TO SOLDIERS
PAYMENT OF ARREARS DEMANDED.
AMENDING- LEGISLATION WANTED.

WELLINGTON, July 30 , a A m< * tln 2 of the Wellington War itt'iiet Association to-day a letter was read from the South Canterbury Relief Society stating that it had written during the lost month concerning three cases in which the Uovernment Advances to Settlers Office had written demanding the payment of arrears of principal which accrued during the soldiers' absence on service. The opinion was expressed in the letter that, as in almost every case the whole of the military pay and allowances had been used in the maintenance of dependents, the Advances to bettiers Oflice should capitalise these amounts and allow them to be paid at the end of the ordinary period of repayment of Uie mortgage. The Chairman said that similar cases had occurred in Wellington. It was decided to endorse the action taicen by the iimaru Society, and that the Minister ot Finance should bo" urged to secure amended legislation to meet the eases.
