Mr Roberts (Food Controller), speaking at Dartford, said that owing to the adverse trade exchange with America the housewife now pays nearly 3d per lb extra for bacon. Unless the "coal output was greatly increased there was no hope oi lower food prices. Mr Roberts added: " We exchange coal for food." Mr Thomas, the Railwaymen's leader, has returned from America. He told an interviewer: "We are certain to loso our commercial supremacy to America unless we drastically change our political methods. We must first restore confidence to the working classes, and induce them to rely on the ballot box and refrain from strikes.—A. and N.Z. Cable, t WHAT THE MINERS LOST. A LESSON IN ECONOMICS. LONDON, July 27. It is estimated that the coal minors have lost £1,670,000 in wages. A sum of £70,000 for strike pay was distributed on Saturday. The Yorkshire Miners' Association lias not yet considered the Government's offer, but will probably meet to-day. The Lancashire and Cheshire Miners' Federation decided to resume work.—A. and N.Z. Cable. YORKSHIRE MINERS' GRIEVANCES. SEPARATE NEGOTIATIONS NECESSARY. LONDON, July 27. (Received July 28, at 8.5 p.nf?) The Yorkshire miners state that they •will decide their own policy, irrespective of the federation, and the miners must reopen negotiations. Apart from piecework • rates there are other disputes, including I the question of a continuous shift. These workers get no reduction of hours under the Sankey report, but some relief or extra payment must "be arranged.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
