THE SOUTHLAND RAILWAY SCHEME.

{To the JSditor of the Daily Times.)

Sir—ln Southland it is ever the fashion to declare Otago realy to take every possible opportunity of running down the neAV piovince, and especially hor ports. Now, Sir, I hope you will read attentively the report of the Chief Surveyor of Southland on tlie Campbell Town or Bluff Harbor Road. You will find him so impressed with the merits of ttie Bluff Harbour that he proposes nofc to take the railway there at fill, although the Superintendent told the Council that he should call them together next month to vote supplies for a railway from iuvorcargill to the Bluff, and Mr Stuart, the Speaker, has gone to Australia, and perhaps to England, on the understanding that the railway to the Bluff was not to be opposed, but AA'ould be «uppoited hy everyone. The Chief Surveyorsees no mci its in the Bluff H arbour over the deep water at the jVfokomoko Inlcfc in the New River, and he urges the Government to give up the Bluff Harbour and carry the rail from Invercargill to a spotju.st within that part of the NeAV River Avhere the Oscar and Guiding Star were wrecked. Fortunately in making this arrangement the underwriters have no cause of complaint—they have for some time declined insuring thither. If the Bluff Harbor is what its Southland friends say it is, certainly the surveyor would consider ifc the fittest place for the railway to commence at.

I am, &c.,

A Looker-on.
