THE ATHENÆUM.
{To the Editor ofthe Daily Times.) ~ Sir,—Do you think that the inhabitants of Dune din know that there is such an excellent! institution as the Athenasum ancl Mechanics' Institute in the city. I cannot but think that the majority of the people are totally ignorant of its existence. The Reading Room of this excellent Institution is open every morning at nine a.m. precisely, and continues open till ten p.m., Avith the exception of an hour at. mid-day from 1 till 2. The Library (which contains about; 2,000 well selected and excellent works on almost every possible subject,) is open from 10 till 12 a.m, and from 4 till 9 pm, for issuing books to members. The Institution is also well supplied AAith the popular magazines of the day—the Art Journal. Illustrated London NeAvs, Home News, Punch, &c. ; the Australian and Tq^manian papers ; our local daily and weekly papers, and also these from the other Provinces of New Zealand ; Otago Government Gazette, Sydney Prices Current, &c. &c. Mr Editor, you will easily see what an opportunity is afforded to all classes of the community, not only to _ become informed in the social, religious, and political state of our fast advancing and beautiful country, but also in extending their knowledge of the arts and sciences. The annual subscription is only two guineas, or 10* 6d per quarter. I am sure this is _ but trifling when compared with the immense privileges of both reading room and library. I am only sorry that so few avail themselves of the opportunities thus afforded.
By inserting this in a corner of your valuable paper you would much oblige, Yours truly,
J. O. M,
R Dunedin, 22ud Nov., 18C2,
