WELLINGTON". December 13.

It is understood that the contract with the Union Steam Shipping Company for tlie conveyance of the Suez mails between Melbourne and Bluff, and which expires shortly, will not be renewed. At the Magistrate's Court, judgment was given in the reserved charges against four publicans for breach of the Beer Duty Act by drawing beer from casks without having defaced the stamp. A fine of Is and costs was inflicted in each case. A further sale of land on the Waimate Plains tQok plaqe to-day, under the deferred payment system. Eighty-one applications \vere received at Hawera. Every section was applied for except section 1, block 5, and there were only five sections with but one applicant. Tliere are good I prospects for casli sales.

The charge of murder against Tuhi is still occupying the Court. Twenty witnesses are yet to be examined. It is not likely that the case will conclude until to-morrow.

At a meeting of Catholics, it was resolved to proceed with the new procathedral according to Mr." Mahoney's plans. The architect's plans provide for the erection of a handsome procathedral

to cover the whole site now occupied by the present church and schools. December 14. Four thousand persons in Auckland are liable to the property tax, by possessing property above the value of LSOO. The Admiralty house here is being renovated for the reception of the Commodore of the station. The postal and telegraph departments, fire brigade and police stations, and public offices are to be shortly connected by telephone. J. L. Lundon, late priest of the Canterbury Mormon Mission, who left Auckland with Elder Pearce f»r Utah, has sent a letter to Auckland, in which he says that, having learned that there is to be another exodus of deluded victims from New Zealand 'to TJta, he considers it his duty, before God and man, to warn intending immigrants. He says that the Mormon priesthood, as a rule, consists of liars, debauchees, and murderers. He instances John Nay lor, who had four wives living while teaching in France that plurality of wives was not taught by Mormon doctrines. The letter gives instances of the seduction of many women. He concludes :—" Mormonism is nothing but a well .organised system of disloyalty and deception, luring thousands to poverty every year. If some of the Mormon elders had -their deserts, they would have been in gaol, while in Mew. Zealandy-for indecent assault, or something worse." He • ißays he could tell a long story of their actions while in New Zealand. ' HAWERA. December 14. One hundred and five applications were received yesterday for deferred payment land, 83 at Hawera and 22 at Patea. Four sections were uncontested. James Crawford, farmer, Waitotara ; John William Barnes, laborer, Blenheim; John Bentley, settler, Wellington ; and James Wilson, platelayer, were the successful applicants. No. 1 section, block 5, was the only section not applied for. There are large numbers here, and competition is likely to be more brisk than at the first sale.

GREYMOUTH. December 14. Yesterday an accident occurred on a lead on the Seventeen-Mile Beach by which a miner named Michael Kerry lost his life. It is conjectured that the giving way of a false set of timber was the cause of the disaster. Every assistance was given by the miners, but life was extinct before Kerry could be released. TIMARTJ. December 13. Another 360 feet contract of the breakwater was completed to-day, making in all about 900 feet. Some 200 feet of the wharf will be ready in about a fortnight, and vessels drawing 14 feet of water can now be accommodated inside, the depth at the end of the wall at low water being 24 feet.

Mr. Wakefield addressed a crowded meeting of electors at the Oddfellows' Hall to-night. Fully 200 persons were present, .who attentively listened and frequently applauded. At the conclusion of the address, a vote of thanks and confidence was passed almost unanimously.
