SIR HERCULES ROBINSON ON NEW ZEALAND.
(by telegraph.) S Wellington, August 30. At the dinner given by Sir W. Fitzherbert in the Council Chamber on Saturday night, his Excellency, in replying to a toast, said had he been a liberty to eonsuit his own inclinations he should have stayed here. He had told his English friends he was pleased with the climate and the people, and that he should like to settle here after he retired into private life. Expecting to remain in New Zealand for his full term, ho had made private arrangements that would have identified him with the interests and amusements of the oountry. He regretted leaving this oountry, which, he said, was of surpassing interest. It had an unrivalled climate, unsurpassed soil, vast mineral resources, and a most favorable geographical position; but the administration here had not always b.een above criticism. The resources of the oountry were so vast that it, Qould not go wrong eventually. Jo proportion to population New Zealand was more in debt than any other country. As a parting advice he would urge New Zealand to rest content with her present pre-eminence in indebtedness. They should not go to the extremity of the proverbial straw or the result would be disastrous; They were very fortunate in getting so able an administrator as Sir Arthur Qordon. He was a most conscientious* able, and high-minded man—a, better could not be found.
