THE RAILWAY EMPLOYES AND THE REDUCTION OF PAY.
(by telegrafb.) CriRisTeKURCH, August 30. At the meeting of the railway employes yesterday there were about 300 present. Many had walked in from the outlying stations. Mr. Ashdon moved, " That we, the employes on the Amberley-Palmerstoiji section of the Middle Island Railways, in conjunction with the Dunedin pledge ourselves to resist the reduction of our wages." Mr. Wilson,.a delegate from Dunedin, spoke to* the resolution, and said he represented 400 men who were determined to struggle to the last against the reduction of wages. He then proceeded to critioiso the action of the General Assembly in deciding upon the ten per cent, reduction. The resolution was carried unanimously. Telegrams were read from Ashburton and Timaru stating that the employes at those centres were willing to resist the proposed reduction. A resolution was proposed and carried to the effect that if the reduction be enforced the committee have full power to act as they think best.
