STRANGE SET OF VAGRANTS.

(by telegraph.) Auckland, August 28.

"What may happen to any roan in the community received remarkable exemplification last night. Mr. Brown, of Victoriastreet, a very quiet and respectable ironmonger and ironworker and deacon of Wellesley-street Baptist Church, received instructions from the owners of the barque Glimpse to repair the galley. As the vessel was ready to sail, he was instructed to get the work done before morning. He went on board, took the measurement, and returned to his shop to make the necessary ironwork. Accompanied, by two workmen, he proceeded to the vessel at midnight and commenced The captain soon Sending three men with their (?oa,ts off; sent for a policeman. The constable arrived, and Brown and his companions endeavored to explain, but the captain positively refused to listen, and ordered the constable to take them into custody. The officer demurred, but finally and the three men were handcuffed and marched up the wharf and lodged in the police cells, a charge being entered against them under jthe Yagrancy Act. They remained there all night and were brought at the Police Court this morning, .when they were of course discharged, no evidence being offered against them. This, however, is very poor compensation for the indignity and wrong suffered, and an action for false improvement is not unlikely to follow.

August 29. The captain of th§ barque Glimpse ha,s made a public apology through the press to Mr. 33xown and his workmen lor having caused th,eir false arrest and imprisonment while working on his vessel.
