LOSS OF THE SHIP CALYPSO.
Our cablegrams torday arjnpunoe the arrival at Home of the ship Calypso, with a large number of passengers and a valuable cargo from Port Chalmers, but the information seems to have been premature. The vessel had nearly reached her destination, and the passengers were doubtless congratulating themselves upon their safe journey to the old land, when the further progress of the good ship was suddenly stopped and her staunch hull consigned to the bottom of the sea. A telegram received in Dunedin yesterday announced the loss of.the ship, which was run down off Margate, but all hands were happily saved. The Calypso was commanded by Captain Hird, and left Port Chalmers for London on January 19th, with the following passengers : —Mr. and Mrs. Grant, Mesdames Nicol, Qibbs, Imrie and family (5), Miss Thomas, Messrs. J. Closs, G. Montgomery, W. Will, J. Callagher, H. Benniwith, F.' A. Miller, and A. D. M'Connell. Her cargo consisted of 4376 bales of wool and sundries, of a total value of L 87,896. She was owned by Captain Leslie and others, and was fully insured in all the colonial offices, having full lines upon her.
