KISSING ON THE SLY AT WAIMATE.

The Waimate Times says :—Rumor has it that a certain citizen, having allowed his gallantry to outrun his discretion with one of the fair daughters of Eve, has been invited by the latter, in defiance of the proverb that " two's company and three's none," to ari interview at which Mr. Beetham, R.M., will be the third party, and the trysting place the Courthouse, Waimate. It is said that the gentleman, who is a benedict yet in his prime, was engaged in the occupation of "seeing Nelly home" (that isn't the young lady's . name, though), when he unfortunately remembered the sweetness of stolen kisses, and forgot the danger of stealing them from unwilling lips. Hence his receipt of a neat billet-doux commencing " Victoria, by the Grace of God," cordially inviting him to make one of a small and select party to-morrow in the temple dedicted to the blind lady of the scales, who, by her minister, the worthy R.M., will be called upon to adjudge the penalty of his rashness during the soft hourß of the s(t)illy (k)night. [by telegraph. J (from our own correspondent. ) Waimate, April B.

At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, Leonard Price) a large merchant, was charged with assaulting a young lady named Elisabeth Johnston. The evidence showed that the defendant accosted the lady on Saturday evening in the street, and offered to see her home. She replied l that there was no necessity ; but he persisted in following her, and, when opposite to the gate leading to Dr. Hoadley's residence, where she was stopping, he drew her towards him and put his arm round her, neck and endeavoured to kiss her. The defendant admitted accompanying her home, but denied attempting to kiss her. He said that he put his arm over her shoulder in opening the gate. The bench was unanimous in considering the oharge proved, and fined the defendant L 5. Mr. Austin, the Council for the defence, obtained leave to appeal on a point as to whether the act of attempting to kiss constituted a common assault. He quoted from; Judge Johnston in support. The court was crov ded the whole time, and great interest was manifested in. the case. On the defendant leaving the court one of the lady's brothers threatened him and he returned and complained to the Bench.
