SPORTING.
TIMARU RACES. [by telegraph.] Timaru, April 8. The races to-day were but very poorly patronised, the weather being . most unfavorable —dull and nasty, with drizzling rain. About 600 persons were on the course. There were two special trains from town. There were very few ladies on the stand. Betting was tame, and the totalisator was badly supported, Teialj Stakes, 50 sovs. Mata ... ... ... ... 1 Huntingdon ... ... ... 2 Volunteer and Marie Antoinette were scratched. Mata was the favorite, and had the lead from the start, winning a waiting race hands down. Maiden Plate, 40 sovs, Volunteer ... ... ... 1 Thilo .., 2 Faugh-a-ballagh ~, ~, 8 Scamp and Huntingdon were soratched. Betting—7 to lon Volunteer. All the horses got away well together. Little John led for some distance, when Volunteer closed up and took first place, with Thilo second, and Little John third. In the straight a neck-and-neck race took place between Volunteer and Thilo, the former eventually winning by half a length.
