NORTH OTAGO BENEVOLENT SOCIETY.
A meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Benevolent Society was held last evening in Mr. Hardy's office, when there were present — ; Messrs. Milligan (President, in the chair), Headland, Ogilvie, Mirams, Allen, Montagu, Falconer,, Greenfied, and Stevenson. The President apologised for the unavoidable absence of the Rev. Mr. Gif-* ford. . After the usual preliminary business had been disposed of, It was resolved that the orders for relief be . equally divided between the various storekeepers in town who are subscribers to the institution. A letter was read from the collector (Mr.. H. Richmond), stating that he had let the cottage in Severn-street to a respectable tenant at.a weekly rental of 10s. Mr.: J. £r. Finch wrote resigning his position on the Committee, and it was resolved to fill, the vacancy at the -next meeting of the Committee. The . Collector's report for the past month was read, which showed that the receipts for rent of the Society's cottages was LlO 10s, while the arrears amounted to Lol. Considerable discussion took place on this matter, Mr. Falconer wishing to know why the collector had not' paid, attention to a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Committe to the effect that summonses should be issued to compel those in arrear to pay.up; He said that there were a number of people on the' list who, he. was surp, could pay their arrears if they .wished to do so, and the only remedy he could see was to issue summonses against them. After a number 'of other gehtlemsn had spoken on the subject, it was pointed out by'tlie Secretary that it. would be very difficult to get at some of the delinquents at present as they were away harvesting. Eventually the report -was received, and the collector authorised to look up some-of those in arrear;;, The Barrack-master's report was read,as follows : The Committee of the North Otago Benevolent Society. ' Gentlemeji,—l have the honor to forward tlio following report for the month of January : , ,-r There rare -five children remaining in the Institution. * I have forwarded the Secretary's letter to James Nash, together with a list, of: clothing required for the use "of his children, but-have received no reply. ■ Eleven domestic servants have been received into the, Servants' Home, all of whom, exception of two, have obtained situations. .The demand for domestic servants is still increasing, and several applicaVtipiis for Country servants', are on the books.have been' received into the "depot during the .month, all of -whom have obtained employment.' . r . Some discussion took place with reference to;_Government immigrants stopping in the Barracks, when it was decided that Mr.- Hesketh be asked what amount of money he -received from the Government as compensation for the keep 1 of these immigrants ; also, that lie be asked to attend the next meeting of the Committee. ..
