At the time appointed for the great sculling match between Hanlan and Courtney, Hanlan rowed over the course alone, Courtney's boat having been sawn asunder the preceding night. Hanlan claimed the 0000 dollars prize, but this was refused under the circumstances. A thousand dollars reward is offered for tlie discovery of the offender. Great excitement prevails. Courtney alleges that an attempt was made to bribe liim, and that Hanlan demanded half the money whichever won. It is expected that wheat will rise 10s to 12s per quarter during the ensuing few weeks. DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (kkutkr's telegram, pp.k press association) Melbourne, October 20. There has been a copious rainfall throughout the Colony, the crops are looking healthy, and the harvest prospects are good. Sydney, October 20. Serious floods are reported at Albury, Surnut, and Adelong, causing great loss of property. A destructive fire has occurred at Maitland. Four shops were completely destroyed. Hobart Town, October 20. The Legislative Assembly has passed a vote of want of confidence in the Ministry. (special to press association.) Melbourne, October 20. The Melbourne Sugar Company have raised the prices of sugar LI per ton all round. Sydney, October 20. A married woman named Jones attempted to shoofc a rival. She chased her through a paddock in Waterloo, a suburb of Sydney, firing four shots from a revolver, all slightly wounding the victim. Some men interfered, and wrenched the revolver from her. The} 7 found 14 cartridges on her. The woman has been remanded.
