[from oni: owx correspond]■".yt. 1 Stdxey, October 20. Captain Carey, well known in New Zealand as master of several vessels, died on board the Rotomahana on the voyage from Auckland to Sydney. At the coroner's inquest a verdict that death occurred from disease of the heart was returned. The deceased was accorded a semi-public fifheral. October 21. An accident has occurred on the Maitland railway, by which forty persons were seriously injured. It was caused through some defect in the couplings. Richmond had a grand gallop this morning. Secundus and Le Loup are certain to defeat Savanaka. The betting is heavy, but unaltered.
