ELECTION GOSSIP.
"Wellington, August 15. . Mr. W. H. Levin, one of the candidates for the city, addressed a large meeting of electors at Adelaide Road to-night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. Mr. W. H. Quick has withdrawn from the contest for the Hutt seat. Sir George Grey leaves for Ohristchurch on the 21st inat., to address the electors. He purposes going South as far as Invercargill, making speeches at the centres of population. Duntdin, August 15. Mr. R. Bacon, bootmaker, will oppose Messrs. Driver and Simpson for Roslyn. It i 3 not at all likely that either Mr. Davie or Mr. Turnbull will stand for Dunedin City. Christohtjkch, August 15. The Conservative meeting last night was not the unanimous Buccess that was expected. Mr. Moorhouse was interrupted in the midst of a diatribe against the Premier by a call for three cheers for Sir George Grey, which were heartily given. Emphatic expression of dissent from the views of the speaker were frequent. The contest for Ashley will probably be narrowed to Messrs. Brown, Moorhouse, and Fendall. Lauce has definitely with drawn, and Gordon and Eiggins are ex ; pected to follow suit. Fendall has no chance, and Moorhouse's supporters are rather anxious. Tlie latter went up to Amberley to-night, and will address the electors in a day or so. A requisition has been presented to Mr. G. W. Wearing, of Kaiapoi, to oppose Mr. Bowen, and it is stated that he has agreed to stand. Mr. W. B. Tosswill's name having been mentioned aa a likely opponent of Mr. Montgomery, that gentleman has emphatically disavowed any such intention. Auckland, August 15. Mr. F. Whitaker will probably be a candidate for Eden. Mr. Barton Ireland to-day declined to stand for City West. Mr. Blakely, Mayor of Onehunga, declined to contest the seat with Mr. O'Rorke.
New Plymooth, August 15 Mr. Moorhouse has been solicited \ stand for New Plymouth, but has <3° clined, as he intends to contest. Christ church. A vote of coniidenco and thanks was carried almost unani. mously, only four or live voting against it. Blenheim, August 15. Mr. Saunders held a meeting of electors at Cheviot last evening. A vote of eonfi. dence was carried. Hokitika, August 15. An influential meeting at Ross, to secure the return of the Hon. Mr. Gisborne, was held last borne's return is certain. It is . 'sure he will be unopposed. No candidates are yet publicly announced for the Hokitika electorate. Invercargill, August 15.' Political feeling runs high, and th o candidates in the field are striving their best to obtain support. There are nine candidates for the three different constituencies of Invercargill Wallaco and Riverton. They are—Messrs Bain, Foldwick, Joyce, Hirst, J. R. Cuthbertson, J. S. M'Donald, Hodgkinson, and Captain Hankinson. Anxiety is now manifested to know when the dissolution will occur, and many think that the delay which is taking place is a political dodge.
