THE GENERAL ELECTION.

For the information of our readers we have compiled lists of the candidates at the ensuing elections. We have spared no pains to make these lists as reliable as possible, and shall correct them from day to day as may be necessary. It will be seen from the information at present obtainable that the seats held by those who voted with the Opposition are most hotly assailed, and in nearly all cases by candidates who, undeterred by the cry of Greyism, have openly declared for the Government. On the other hand, the new candidates for seats held by Government supporters are declared Liberals, and are brought forward owing to the retirement of the sitting members, as in the case of Hokitika, Grey and Bell, Caversham, Rodney, and others. The contests in a few other cases arise out of local causes, such as at Tuapeka and Auckland City West. So far the chances of the Government party appear to be most satisfactory :
