(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). WELLINGTON. August 15. His Excellency and Lady Robinson, with Captain Maxwell of H.M.S.Emerald, leave by the Hinetnoa at 8 o'clock this evening for Nelson. The object of Sir Hercules and Lady Robinson s visit to Nelson is to see their son, who is now at college there. They return to Wellington on Sunday. The new writs will be sent to the returning officers by telegraph. Colonel Whitmore left for Napier today, to be present at the opening of the Ainuri bridge. AUCKLAND. August 15. The Thames monthly yield of gold is the smallest for nearly three years—2697 ounces. A meeting of the Chamber'of Commerce wa3 held to discuss a memorial of the Sydney Chamber on the 3ubjeci of the duties levied on the American tariff. The meeting was adjourned till Wednesday. Mr. Dargaville tendered the following motion : " That the interests of the colony and particularly of this provincial district will not be served by throwing open our markets free to products of other countries while New Zealand products of the same class are excluded from theirs." A meeting of the Trade Society is convened to form a Working Men'a Political Association. August 16. Rewi is urging Te Wheoro to stand for the West Maori electoral district in the interest of the Government. The Kaipara railway extension is expected to be opened from Auckland to Waiokomaiti at the end on the month. NEW PLYMOUTH. August 15. A serious accident occurred this morning at the Sugar Loaves. About half-past 11, while the men employed by the Harbor Board were engaged in stripping the face of the cliff at the works, an immense slip occurred, buryii-g four workmen. William Hawker had his leg smashed above the ankle ; Wm. Crooks' ankle was dislocated; Patrick Ryan and Hume were seriously crushed by a fall of earth, but no bones were broken. CHRISTCHURCH. August 15. It was reported to the police last evening that an elderly man named George Verrall, residing near the Avon at New Brighton, had been missing from his home for a week. Verrall, who had been addicted to drink, until recently wa3 living separate from his wife. On two occasions he had fallen into the river, and had been rescued by neighbors each time. As he W&3 daily in- the habit of drawing water from the river, it is feared that an accident has befallen him. The police went down early this morning to drag the river, but up to this afternoon had not | been successful in their search. At a meeting of the sub-committee on the Town Hall designs, held yesterday, a report was read from Messrs. Hubbard and Drewett, quantitative surveyors, appointed . to examine the six designs selected. The report stated that none of the six could be erected for the sum fixed as the limit in the conditions.' TIMARU. August 15. A fall of snow took place in the back country last night. One man near Burke's Pass states that he has not seen ICO of his flock of oyer 10,000 sheep for six weeks. DUNEDIN. August 15. By the outward mail to-day the Harbor Board sent home full instructions to Messrs. Galbraith, Denny, and Darling, the commissioners appointed to arrange
for the purchase of a twin-screw hopper dredge, to work on, the Otago bar. She must be qualified to work and dredge in a depth of water from 8 feet to 30 feet, to lift an average of not less than 350 tons of free soil an hour, and to steam, when loaded, eight knots an hour. Alternative tenders will be asked for one with a carrying capacity of 750 tons, and one of 1000 tons. The sum of 500 guineas is placed at the disposal of the commissioners.
