WELLINGTON. August 11. Two Italian fishermen were found in an open boat, 14 feet long, two miles out to sea yesterday. It is not known how the boat came to be adrift. It is understood that Mr. Matthew Price, who has been Resident Magistrate in several parts of the Colony, has been appointed second Magistrate for Wellington for hearing criminal cases, and civil cases up to L2O. Mr. M. Travers, second clerk of the Resident Magistrate's Court, and who has been transferred to Maketu, was today presented by members of the Bar with a breech-loading fowling piece, and a gold locket, in recognition of his courteous behaviour during his stay in Wellington. August 12. Nellie Lawson, barmaid at the Post Office Hotel, was arrested this morning on a charge of stealing from Ludwig's jewellery shop. CHRISTCHURCH. August 11. The Drainage Board, before importing any more drain pipes, are going to give local manufacturers a chance of competing. A man named M'Killan was arrested by the police on board the Hero, when she called at Russell on her way to Sydney. Colonel Fraser, R.M., and Warden of the Thames goldfiulds for the last ten j'ears, sat for the last time this morning. The Collector of Customs refused to allow importers a reduotion for cash discount in London, and Mr. G. T. Chapman having protested, the Commissioner lias refunded the overcharge. The matter had been previously before the Chamber of Commerce. At 8.30 last night the Waikato train ran into a mob of cattle at the fiftieth mile-post, killing two of them and throwing eleven waggons off the line. A train with a working party left to-day to clear the line, which is blocked. Arrived Brigantine Meg Merriles, from Fiji. She reports the arrival of the Agnes Donald at Levuka with labor. She had a boat's crew killed at the Island of Pentecost. TIMARU. August 11. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, Charles Walkden Wood, recently arrested at Wellington, was committed for trial on three charges of fraudulent bankruptcy. The fourth charge is still proceeding. Five mounted constables, who arrived on Saturday en route for Waitaki, to assist in the removal of the troublesome Maoris, returned to Christchurch to-day. GREYMOUTF. August 11. At a crowded public meeting held on Saturday night, the fallowing resolutions were unanimously carried : —That in the opinion of this meeting it is desirable that the Hokitika and Greymouth railway should be diverted, so ;;s to pass through Kumara, Goldsborough, and Stafford, as such deviation would be to the interest of Greymouth and the Grey Valley district, as well as the different centres of population, and would conduce to the prosperity of the West Coast generally ; that, with the view of giving effect to the foregoing resolution, a petition to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works be prepared and signed by the inhabitants of Greymouth and this district. KELSON. August 11. A special correspondent at Moutere telegraphs that there is a high Hood at the Lower Moutere. The residents have been compelled to leave by the overland mail coach for Motueka, but have not arrived at the latter place. There has been a heavy storm of wind and rain, which commenced last night. No damage is reported in the neighborhood of Nelson.
