MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
I The usual fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were prosent—Councillors Gibbs (in the chair), Mainland, Procter, Headland, Humphrey, and Spence. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. An application from Mr. F. H. Townsend for permission to erect ij-on buildings with wood frame work on section 12, Harbor Board block, was granted. Mr. Johnston applied for permission to erect a verandah in front of Mr. Milligan's shop in Thames-street, and to extend the workshop and raise the roof. The Inspector of Nuisances reported in connection with this thfit the work had been proceeded with after he had earned Mr. Milligan not to do so. He asked the Council to defer dealing with the matter pending the result of legal proceedings which he had taken. Consideration of the matter was deferred. An application from Mr. Johnston, to erect build".-in Thames-street on section 14, bl'" ii IV., for W. Thomas Kennedy, was granted. The application of Mr. H. Kite, for
permission to erect a wooden building on section 2, block 25, was referred to the Public Works Committee with power to act.
_ Mr. Hugo Lippert applied for permission to erect an iron building on the site of his shop recently destroyed by fire, and agreeing to build three feet from the building line, in order to leave room for the erection of a stone building at some future time, Mr. Lippert also attended in person to urge his request, and after listening to him, the Council referred the matter to the Public Works Committee, with power to act. Permission was given for the transfer of the lease of section 2, block 33, from Mr. Joseph Booth to Mr. Thos. Williamson. The Clerk to the Kakanui Road Board wrote, stating that deputation from the Board would wait upon the Council's tenants, the Oamaru Stone Company, with a view to obtaining if possible the leasehold interest in the land required, for the purpose of road deviation in section 42, block VI. A letter was read from Mr. H. Connell
with reference to a claim for compensation made by Mr. Alexander Grant for loss of water through a spring having been destroyed by the tunnel in connection with the Waterworks, on block XIII., Oamaru, advising the Council that Mr. Grant was entitled to compensation, and asking what amount should be tendered.— The matter was referred to the Waterworks Committee.
Mr. Baudinet obtained permission to put in a drain across the footpath opposite section 8, block XXXVII., provided glazed pipes be used and the work performed under the supervision of the Engineer. The Mayor wrote apologising for liis absence from the meeting, and enclosing a telegram from the Colonial UnderSecretary stating that the sum of L7O had been allocated to Oamaru out of the vote for public gardens. The Secretary to the School Commissioners wrote stating that the question of the land required for the Waterworks I would be considered at the next meeting. The Inspector of Nuisances having reported that a great stench arose from the grating in front of the Empire Hotel, the matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :—Ordinary account, L 276 19s 9d ; gas, L 417 ; Waterworks, L 1950 10s Bd. The Council then rose.
