WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
On the Council resuming yesterday, after the adjournment for lunch, Mr. D. Sutherland, owing to the Hon. R. Campbell being called away, took the chair. The following business was transacted:— Mr. Alex. Young, Clerk to the Hampden Road Board, wrote, stating that the Board had appointed a ranger to impound cattle, etc., trespassing on fenced roads and streets in the district, at a salary of L 26 per annum, and asking that the Council might subsidise the ranger's salary, so that he might impound cattle trespfissing on the county roads. Some discussion* took place upon the matter, Mr. Murcott moving that the application should be refused. Mr. Duncan seconded this,
Mi'. Todd moved, and Mr. Falconei seconded, an amendment to the effect that the County Council should pay hall the ranger's salary for three months. This was carried, Mr. Murcott withdrawing his motion. The Clerk to the Ivakanui Road Board (Mr. Garrow) wrote calling attention tc the large amount of traffic on the roadline at the proposed works at Island Stream, and to the necessity for the Council taking action towards having the bridge constructed with as little delay as possible. The Clerk having read a lengthy report which he had been ordered at last meeting to prepare upon the subject, it was decided to let the whole matter stand over for consideration at a full meeting. Tenders for various works were opened and the following accepted :—Contract No. SS, formation of 56 chains road in block 11, Oamaru district, P. Corcoran (L 266 7s) ; contract 60, formation of 44 chains road, block 9, Awamoko, D. Heron (196 12s 9d) ; contract 61, formation of 98A chains road in 11, Oamaru, D. Heron (229 lis 6d) ; contract 62, gravelling 70| chains in Incholme, H. Wallace (L2lB 15s. The Inspector's and Engineer's reports were read. Mr. Murcott then, in accordance with notice of motion, moved " That L2O be contributed to the North Otago Benevolent Society from the County funds." He said he did so because the Society had done its work very efficiently in relieving distress, and was deserving of support. The Vincent County Council had passed a similar vote to the Dunedin institution. Mr. Duncan seconded the motion, saying he was only sorry that the amount was so small, but they could supplement it at some future time. The motion was carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. Murcott, it was resolved, ' • That tenders be called for the surface work in Hampden Riding for the next twelve months, and that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for certain works in Hampden township. Mr. Falconer said he had been desired by the Otepopo Road Board to request the Council to agree to gravel the road leading past the school-house to the railway station. Jn the event of this being done, the Board would be willing to take back the roads already taken over by the Council. The matter gave rise to some discussion, but eventually it was decided to postpone its further consideration until next meeting, the Clerk to asoertain in the meantime if the Otepopo Road Board was agreeable to make an exchange of roads. Mr. Falconer, according to notice, moved, " That the Council grant the sum of L3BO to the Otepopo Road Board, to construct a road to the coal pit up Breakneck Pinch, or carry out the work itself. Some discussion took place upon the matter, but eventually the motion was adjourned. The Clerk was directed to write to the lessee of the Upper Ferry punt, requesting him to have a board erected with a scale of fees affixed thereto as fixed by the Council, Accounts to the amount of LI3OB 4s 5d were passed for payment, and the Council rose.
