WELLINGTON. j December 20. I It has been found that the extension of the hours of labor in connection with the Custom House has not becen taken advantage of to any great extent, and is not considered necessary. The Post says it is not improbable that the Government will return to the old hours before long. The following acceptances for the Wellington Gold Cup were received to-night : Fishhook, Maritana, Danebury, Lara, Laertes, Ulama, Longlands, Camballo, Pungawerewere, Venus Transit, Pinfire, Rata, Mufti, Duke, Morning Star, Lady Grey, Kinc' Quail, Pohokura, Sailor. The Government wrote on the 14th inst. to the Government of New South Wales, to enquire what space would be available for New Zealand at the forthcoming exhibition to be held at Sydney. No reply has yet been received. The Chamber of Commerce has had a communication from the Board of Trade of the Dominion of Canada, suggesting that delegations from the Chambers of Commerce in all the British colonics should meet in London in the course of next year. The Native Minister goes North to-day. The Government have informed the Coamber of Commerce that they cannot give a definite reply, regarding the railway station site until the Minister of Works returns from Wellington. Tho Nelson City Council decided unanimously to decline Government proposals with respect to the question of charitable aid. December 21. A Supplementary Gazette notifies that pay and travelling allowance for non-commis-sioned officers and constables shall be as follows:—Police Scrgt.-Majors, lis per day ; Ist class Sergts., 10s ; 2nd clrss, 9s Cd ; 3rd class, 9s ; Ist class constable, Ss Gd ; 2nd class, Ss ; 3rd class, 7s 6d ; Reserve Sergt.Major, 9s 6d ; Ist class Sergt., 9s ; 2nd class, Ss (>d : 2nd class constable, 7s ; 3rd class, Cs Gd. Travelling allowance of non-commis-sioned officers and constables is fixed at the rate of 6s per diem. Detectives—Chief detective, ] 6s per day ; 1 st class detectives, 14s; 2nd class, 12s Gd ; 3rd class, lis; 4th class, 10s. All the Government Offices will be closed on the 26th December. A letter from the Government announces that the capitation grant will bo calculated on all children attending Education Board schools, irrespective of age. The ages named in the Education Act were over five and under sixteen. A private letter received in town states that Dr. Somerville arrived in Glasgow on the 12th October, and was received by a largo number of friends, who collected at his house to welcome him on his return. The Doctor's health is said to be much improved. Delegates from employes in the drapery and clothing trades met several of tho employers this morning to discuss the halfholiday question. It was unanimously agreed that the 2 1l 'csent hours should be shortened, but there was some difference of opinion as to whether it wovld be better to give a half-holiday on Wednesdays or close at 6 or 7 o'clock on Saturday evening. It was decided that those employers who were not present should bo canvassed to ascertain their wishes. CHRISTCHURCH. December 20. Tenders amounting to L 35,000 have just been accepted for the supply of 15,000 tons of Newcastle coal, during the coming year, for the Christchurch and Otago railways. The racehorse Maritana was despatched North by the Wakatipu to-day, to fulfil her racing engagements. Two more engines have arrived by the Hurunui for the Christchurch railways. Three more are on their way by the Thames and the Piako. This wili make a total of 75 between Amberley and Invercargill. NEW PLYMOUTH. December 20, The Stella arrived last night with the Jackson's Bay settlers. They are chiefly foreigners, and can speak but little English. The few English families amongst them will find immediate employment. BALCLUTHA. December 20. The last rails in Proudfoot's contract, Balclutha to Clinton, were laid this afternoon. An engine, with one carriage, from Clinton, arrived at Balclutha station at 4 o'clock. Of course, the ballasting and ballasting and filling in require to be done before the line is ready for traffic. ' THE PALMERSTON SHOW. 0 . We have not space to make any additions to the necessarily brief remarks contained in our last issue upon the fourteenth annual show of the Waikonaiti and Shag Valley . Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held at Palmerston yesterday.
