The Secretary of State for the Colonies, replying to a question in the House of Commons, said the relations with the South African chief Cetewayo were critical. The Governor of the Cape had sent a message to him, but it was an ultimatum, and he hoped an amicable settlement would yet be effected. In the debate in the House of Commons, on 'the motion of the Under-Secretary for India, with reference to the cost of the Afghan war, he said it was not intended to charge the whole on the Indian revenue.
